When learning guitar, is it better to learn to read guitar tab or to read the actual notes?

Go fore music theory (notes)

Although tab is definitely useful for quickly grasping any popular song quickly. But as you will want to to be become a more competent musician you will come across situation whereby you need to understand music theory and notes. For example playing guitar for a singer who might require you to change the key. It very difficult to visualize key changes on tab.

Tab is also very easy to grasp, if you can grasp notes you can find it much easier to grasp tab. So definitely go for notes. as you can learn to transcribe to any instrument, which is very useful for any guitarist/musician.

Also more important than those two I feel. Is learning by ear. Train your ear rigorously because it will improve your playing of any instrument, understanding of notes harmony which are so very crucial for any competent musician. Any guitar tutor(I 200% recommend) will allude to these facts however I feel you might self taught. If you don’t want a DVD program (the best being Learn and Master Guitar) the best is to:

learn your instrument in context to music theory: http://www.zentao.com/guitar/theory/
train your ear: google any ear training programs, a lot are free. and always try figure out any song you like by playing small parts of it, and trying to play it on guitar, obviously when you begin its extremely painful and requires diligence as you will be repeating parts quite a lot to figure them out. In good time though, its extremely rewarding as you can accompany and musicians or bands easily and naturally. Oh yeah.

Join a band as soon you can! or a music group or whatever. Nothing beats it!!

Tab is really helpful for learning songs, but when you start out and continue in your musical "career," you will want to know how to read notes. Notes are better than tab, even though tab is easier. Learn to read both.

    Hmm good question.
If you learn to read actual notes then you will be a lot more skilled and will be better prepared for any music courses you may decide to do and reading notes is classed as a much better skill than reading Tabs.
However, Guitar tabs can be found free on the internet where as notes can not and they are a lot easier to read.
I suggest whilst you are learning use guitar tabs however, when you are a little bit more experienced start to learn how to read actual notes because as i say this is a much better skill to have and will help with any courses you take to do with music and will help you to progress in a career in guitar playing/music.

But, I’ve been playing guitar for a few years and me and my mate use Tabs, more than the real notes.(We’re learning actual notes though, it just requires patience- And I ‘aint got much :D )

Tab will take you seconds to learn and will get you playing your favorite songs fast and free
But learning notation in really usefully and should be learned at some point

    Just one word

    Actual notes- Professional
    Tab- Fun

If you REALLY wanna do a ‘major’ in guitar then you have to learn actual notes
If you wanna play for fun and stuff then, I guess tabs are just fine

I learned them both though. But it was great.
