Learning to play guitar by first learning to read guitar tabs, is by for the quickest way to begin playing guitar without being slowed down by huge amounts of theory.

Don’t get me wrong..  Music Theory and Guitar Theory can be extremely rewarding, but we find so many potential guitarists are put off because they are forced to learn large amounts of theory, rather than starting with the fun of actually playing guitar.

That is what has developed many a finger style player and given the guitar such versatility and expression. Start with forefinger and thumb to draw the strings towards you, add the middle and next think of each as an individual ‘pick’ to learn to get a pattern.

Pattern meaning, each finger follows the other in line, dedicated to the same string to same finger. Then comes tempo or sequence of which the speed and even ‘cross-picking’ (alternating) within the pattern is learned. All according to the piece of music or ’score’ melody is to be presented.

(The thumb usually carries (alternates) the two bass strings during such rhythmic play. And, use the pinky for upper register accents and additional chord pattern notation with the left hand.)

You can get books on the techniques as well as DVDs that can provide performers and their particular styles and how it is done. All this short of serious instruction from a teacher.

are there any tweaks i can make with pickup height, string gauge etc that will help?
(Ive done amp settings, makes it a little better, but i think the issue is the guitar now)

Thicker gauge strings will accentuate the bass. Thinner strings will have less boom. As far as settings, obviously the bridge pickup has more twang than the neck pickup. The closer the pickup is to the strings, the stronger signal it will produce. If you want more or less bass response, move that side of the pickup up or down accordingly. You can also move the individual pole screws on the pickup in or out. Take care not to adjust the pickup too close…the magnetic field of the pickup can damp the sustain of the string. When you press the strings on the highest frets, the closest distance should be the thickness of a coin.

If that doesn’t do it for you, you could always consider a phase/polarity switch.
