I am a beginner and i’m looking for popular songs (or Beatles because i LOVE them!!
) to learn on the guitar.
Look up Collective Soul the World I Know. Its a fun song to play because it involves some complex sounding, but easy to play riffs. if you look up the tabs for it and watch an instructional video, it will be much easy to learn. that was the first song I learned to play on the guitar, and its good because its not one that everyone knows, you will likely be one of the few who will know it. unlike other songs like smoke on the water. there isnt a guitarist alive that cant play that…

I don’t have a piano but I do have a non-fullsize guitar. Are there any ways to learn these instruments online for free without the instruments?
A very large part of learning an instrument involves "muscle memory." You can intellectually understand how and where to place your fingers, but until you can actually perform the motions you aren’t playing. The way you train your finger muscles is by actually playing…pressing the correct keys on the piano…or strings on a guitar. By repeating these motions thousands of times, you etch them into your memory.
There are plenty of online Learn-To-Play resources for both piano and guitar. It will certainly help you to familiarize yourself with the instrument by using those resources…..but you’ll never learn to play without hours/weeks/years of practice on an actual instrument. If your small sized guitar is playable..as in not a toy….you can learn all your fingering, strumming and timing on that. The size of the guitar isn’t crucial. As long as it’s big enough to fit your fingers between the frets, your skills will translate to a full sized guitar.
I really don’t see how you can learn to play piano without some sort of keyboard. Even if you were to draw piano keys on a piece of cardboard, you wouldn’t get the audio feedback to know if it sounds correct…and you wouldn’t get the feel. There are many inexpensive mini keyboards…probably you can find one for almost nothing at a yard sale. I’m sorry but I don’t see how you can learn in a void.

Go fore music theory (notes)
Although tab is definitely useful for quickly grasping any popular song quickly. But as you will want to to be become a more competent musician you will come across situation whereby you need to understand music theory and notes. For example playing guitar for a singer who might require you to change the key. It very difficult to visualize key changes on tab.
Tab is also very easy to grasp, if you can grasp notes you can find it much easier to grasp tab. So definitely go for notes. as you can learn to transcribe to any instrument, which is very useful for any guitarist/musician.
Also more important than those two I feel. Is learning by ear. Train your ear rigorously because it will improve your playing of any instrument, understanding of notes harmony which are so very crucial for any competent musician. Any guitar tutor(I 200% recommend) will allude to these facts however I feel you might self taught. If you don’t want a DVD program (the best being Learn and Master Guitar) the best is to:
learn your instrument in context to music theory: http://www.zentao.com/guitar/theory/
train your ear: google any ear training programs, a lot are free. and always try figure out any song you like by playing small parts of it, and trying to play it on guitar, obviously when you begin its extremely painful and requires diligence as you will be repeating parts quite a lot to figure them out. In good time though, its extremely rewarding as you can accompany and musicians or bands easily and naturally. Oh yeah.
Join a band as soon you can! or a music group or whatever. Nothing beats it!!
PERFORM PERFORM PERFORM!!!

What is a good, helpful way to learn acoustic guitar tabs? I don’t understand how to play them at all. I’ve read articles and stuff on how to play them but they don’t help at all. Does anyone know a good website or you tube video or anything that can teach how to play tabs? Please help.

Reading tab is pretty easy so you’ll catch on quickly.
Good luck!

and what are the benefits of learning them from guitar tabs.
If you can learn by ear, this will benefit you far more in the long run than any tab program.
It’s a painful process….sometimes you know your guitar is tuned to A=440, but it still sounds out of tune to the recording. You may have to tune your guitar, by ear, to the recording…they may be playing in Eb…popular with SRV and other guitarists.
However, 90% of the time, having your guitar tuned to A=440 (concert pitch) will allow you to try different chords to figure what key the song might be in…then filling in the rest of the chords.
Most guitarists can tell you the difference in sound between the standard D chord and say, a G chord..they just sound different…or the difference in sound between an Am and a C chord..eventhough they share many of the same notes.
You can always verify your chord charts with tabs at a later date. (Do not always assume tabs found on the internet are accurate)
Developing your ear is the single most important aspect for any musician.
