I am 13 and i am seeking to learn the guitar. I have seen many online tutorials to learn how to play the guitar. I do not yet have a guitar to learn with, but i think lessons with an instructor are sort’ve expensive where i live, and i don’t want to go wasting my money if the plan i have to learn is too difficult. Are there any special books that are excellent and perhaps easy to learn guitar? Or, does anyone have any good websites that teaches lessons or tutorials for the guitar?
Hey.. James here..
It wasn’t until probably the last six months or so that I’ve been able to play the guitar. I’ve always been very interested since a young age considering my dad and his brothers pretty much grew up on the guitar and drums. It’s always been in the family and when I would watch them play they always made it look so easy.. it seemed like almost a natural thing for them. I tried for years to learn how to play… tried to have my father help me, looked to books to teach me, spent hours on youtube watching people try to explain.. etc. Nothing ever really worked. I eventually gave up for a few years then just within the past year or so I became interested in it again when I would see all these girls just going crazy over musicians at shows/concerts… lol. So I started looking online and came across this website .. http://www.guitar.pcti-system.com … which is an online program with videos and the works that teaches everything you need to know to learn how to play.
It’s probably the best tutorial/instructional course I’ve ever seen… I learned how to play the guitar very quickly and now it seems like I can almost play songs by ear.. something my uncle can do. I’m actually planning on tryin to start up a band with a few friends of mine after I get myself a newer more expensive better quality guitar. But I definitely would have never learned it if it wasn’t for that course.
I hope I was of some help to you my friend, and I wish you the best of luck! Rock on.
This program was conceived as a promotional vehicle for Steinberger Sound and was distributed to all of the Steinberger dealers at the time. It features discussions and demos with artists like Rick Derringer, Arlen Roth, Vinnie Zummo and others, as well in-depth interview segments with Ned on design, feature and performance aspects of his instruments. A highlight is a detailed demo on how to set up a TransTrem from Ned himself. Full program is broken into 5 segments for easier downloading.

I give an example of some of the many songs that can be played using the same four chords in the same order.
Watch my guitar lesson to learn how to play these four chords: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmChNlDknbM
Watch my other video, “4 Chords, 21 Songs on Guitar” to see me play 21 different songs with these four chords: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzkilz940dw
*Note: A few things may be confusing for those of you who watch my instructional video and try to play these songs, so I will try to ease your confusion.
1) In the instructional video I teach the chords G,D,Em,C, whereas in this video I play C,G,Am,F and use a capo. The songs can be played with either set of chords, but will be in a different key, depending on which you use.
2) If you want to play along with me while watching the video but don’t have a capo, then you can play D#, A#, Cm, G# (sorry, it’s awkward).
3) The order of the chords after “Take On Me” switches from C,G,Am,F (G,D,Em,C) to Am,F,C,G (Em,C,G,D). It is the same order of chords, but I start with the minor chord for the last few songs.
4) Not all of these songs use ONLY these four chords in this order, so I may just be playing a section of the song that does.
5) I don’t have the strumming pattern written down or anything, so if you want to figure it out I just suggest playing along with the video, or try making up your own strumming patterns.
The songs I play in order are:
James Blunt – You’re Beautiful
Five for Fighting – Superman (It’s Not Easy)
Jason Mraz – I’m Yours
Fort Minor – Where’d You Go
Maroon 5 – She Will Be Loved
Alicia Keys – No One
Black Eyed Peas – Where is the Love?
Rex Hermogino – Love on the Internet
Mika – Happy Ending
Beatles – Let It Be
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under the Bridge
Michael Jackson – Man in the Mirror
a-ha – Take On Me
T.I. – Whatever You Like
OneRepublic – Apologize
Outlandish – Aicha
Toto – Africa
Eagle Eye Cherry – Save Tonight
Beyonce – If I Were a Boy

I learned the E pentatonic minor scale, but I have trouble soloing in other keys and moving the pattern up and down the fretboard. Is it worth learning the major scale and how to form scales with music theory? Do you guitar players learn scales based on notes or patterns? And does anyone have any advice on how I can better teach myself to solo in different keys? (It’s kind of lame to keep asking people to play rhythm parts in E all the time)
Memorize box shapes for whatever scale you’re intent on learning. There are a variety of box shapes, e.g. for E pentatonic minor, that you can find all over the fretboard.
Take a look at the link, which is are the notes for E minor pentatonic. You can see that the open notes EADGBe are repeated at the 12th fret. You just need to break down everything in between frets 0 and 12 into boxes that span 4 frets.
The website I gave is pretty useful for that purpose. If you choose the drop down box for "Fret" and choose a certain fret, it’ll highlight the notes in the box that starts at that specified fret.
