where can i get a good guitar setup? how much should i expect to pay to set up an out-of box electric?

24th December

i bought a guitar from guitarcenter today and asked for a setup-and the jerk said the set-up people come in later, and charge 35-170 dollars for one.
i played a floor model, and wanted to buy a new, fresh out of the box model-unscratched, no messy fingerprints.

the string action is pretty low, im not a big fan of that.

It varies depending on what kind of guitar it is, how good the tech is at setting one up, and how much you really care.

I personally have never paid anyone to set up one of my guitars – though I have friends who pay between 30-50 bucks to have it done (and I usually can’t tell much difference before and after).

If you are REALLY picky about how the guitar is set up, like having really low action, and perfect intonation, etc., then you pay accordingly. If you are reasonably intelligent, you can go online and find a wide variety of instructions for setting one up, or just figure it out yourself.

If you are just starting, then learning how to put strings on, and set intonation is a good idea. Things like adjusting truss rods and action get a little more involved, but aren’t that difficult to get the hang of.

Question About Learning Guitar Tabs?

24th December

Alright so I’ve been trying to learn to play the acoustic guitar via this book my grandma got me. The book is fine but when trying to learn from a book I get bored real right quick and set it off to the side. Any who I mentioned to a co worker of mine that I’m trying to learn to play he suggested that I just learn to read tabs and then find a simple song I want to learn and start there. Imma go ahead and try out this method because I think if I was actually trying to learn a song and not just repeating the same three boring chords over and over I’d probably be able to get some real practice in. So uh wheres a good place to learn tabs and how long do you think it’ll take? Thanks for the feedback yo.

The good thing about tabs is that you don’t really have to learn anything to read them and play a song. It tells you exactly what fret to hold down and what strings to pluck or strum.

Tabs for a six string guitar will have six lines, so each line represents a string. The bottom line is the heavy E string, and the next line is the next string which is A, and so on. (If it’s your first time reading tabs it may seem backwards, but it’s made to match what the fret board looks like looking down while holding your guitar)

There are many sites that have free tabs of most popular songs. They’re not perfect because they’re written by randoms, but there is usually at least one decent version if the song is well known. One of my favourites is ultimate-guitar.com. You can also buy a book of an album or collection if there’s a particular band you want to learn songs for. These would usually come with tabs and would be much more reliable.

The only thing that might trip you up is the notation some people use. I explained several of the most common symbols you’ll run into in an answer a few months back:

If there’s anything I left out or was unclear about, I’d be glad to help.

The instruction manual comes in the game case, unless sometimes when it’s a used copy.

I can’t post every possible little thing that you can think of, but I can offer some things.
Firstly though..
You’re missing important information.
What system is it for?

How do i convince my parents to let me learn guitar?

21st December

I’m doing abrsm piano grade 8 and I’m taking the exam next year, and I really want to learn guitar but my parents just won’t let me. They just want me to finish piano, and i really want to have a guitar and learn guitar and stuff..

Why not both? If you can convince your parents to let you buy a guitar and a music book, you can keep up with your piano lessons and teach yourself guitar. Luckily, it is one of the few instruments that is fairly easy to learn on your own. Once you understand the basics, you can do a Google search for the chords for songs you like.
